JOSEPH, Mo. -- Airmen from the 139th Airlift Wing wore jeans on April 23, 2015 in honor of Denim Day, an event that aims to raise awareness of sexual assault. "We got approval from wing leadership for Denim Day," said Maj. Becki Restrepo, the wing's sexual assault and response coordinator, or SARC. "It's just one of the many things we're doing during April to raise awareness of sexual assault." Denim Day started as result of an Italian Supreme Court ruling on a rape charge. The accuser was convicted and sentenced, however the court overturned the conviction saying "it is a fact of common experience that it is nearly impossible to slip off tight jeans even partly without the active collaboration of the person who is wearing them," according to the Columbia Journal of European Law. This decision moved people across Italy and the world to start the "International Jeans for Justice Day," which eventually became known as Denim Day.
