Adriano 139th Airlift Wing 2/08/2009 -- Base leadership and the wing Safety office want to remind motorcyclists of AFI 92-207, which details individual requirements for riders entering the installation. "AFI 91-207 3.4.2.4 Personal Safety Protection is not a new instruction, but an Air Force standard now actively being enforced for rider safety," said Senior Master Sgt. Dwayne King, superintendent for the 139th Safety office. In addition to helmets, goggles, gloves, appropriate foot covering, and the protective clothing, required of all motorcyclists entering the base, the 139th will begin to concentrate on the next point (3.4.2.4.5) "Garment and Motorcycle Visibility" compliance. Everybody has been really good about getting in compliance; with we just need to go a little further, said King. The instruction requires riders to wear "brightly-colored outer upper garment during the day and reflective upper garment during the night. Outer upper garment shall be visible and not covered." The fluorescent/reflective mesh vests the Department of Transportation workers use is just fine, said King. The primary concern is that all equipment meets or exceeds the minimum safety standards. Backpacks are authorized if has brightly colored/reflective properties. Wear of the base-issued reflective Safety Belts on outerwear, placed diagonally and over the shoulder, has been approved by the commander. "This is the same AFI briefing riders get during their Motorcycle Certification training," said King.
