Protective skills in focus as wing hosts sexual assault prevention awareness seminar Published June 17, 2009 By Senior Airman Jennifer Adriano 139th Airlift Wing St. Joseph -- In a seminar designed to empower military members and their families, the 139th Airlift Wing was host to a training activity in conjunction with Sexual Assault Awareness month in May. The Sexual Assault Prevention Awareness seminar was co-hosted by Technical Sgt. Jackie Moser, 139 AW/CSS and her husband Master Sgt. Shawn Moser (Ret.), a former wing member. While it was open to members and their families, the group was comprised of moms and daughters, and some moms with sons at the event. The training involves a couple of different interactive modules, including a dramatic short video session interview between a serial rapist and a psychologist. "Discussion of the video brings up conversation and ultimately debunks myths," said Jackie Moser. The second half of the presentation is taught by Shawn Moser. His presentation speaks to ways to prevent assault, and teaches various self-defense protection techniques. It is recommended for 15-24 year old females because they are commonly targeted. "We want to make sure college-bound students and high school students get the opportunity to take the seminar before heading back to school this fall," said Jackie Moser. Shawn Moser's 26 years of karate, and Jackie's passion for helping sexual assault victims propelled Shawn and Jackie to put their talents to use as a training tool. Jackie Moser said she would get frustrated waiting for the call to come from the hospital saying someone had been raped. "We wanted to do something to help to prevent sexual assault," she said, "So we are taking a proactive approach to the problem, and trying to help women learn the protective skills before attackers can strike." Another seminar is scheduled for either August or September. If you have any further questions, please contact Jackie Moser at Jackie.Moser@mostjo.ang.af.mil, or at ext. 3219.
