Facts about Donuts Published March 17, 2010 By Major Kathleen Thompson 139th Airlift Wing St. Joseph, MO. -- The new physical fitness regulation will be enforced come July 1 2010 and if you haven't heard by now the new guidelines are stricter than ever before. To help assist with meeting those requirements the 139th MDG will be submitting health promotion articles to the Air Scoop on a monthly basis. When we are busy, it is easy to lose sight of healthy eating; we eat on the run and grab whatever is convenient. During a hectic guard drill weekend, many of us need to double our efforts to make healthy choices especially when temptations are high and we just do not have the time to sit down for breakfast, as we would like. Here is a good example of what many of us consume during morning of guard drill weekend: 2-Glazed cake donuts ------------------------------ 834 calories 1-Cup of plain brewed coffee --------------------- 2 calories or 16oz Starbucks café Mocha ----------------------- 360 calories Total calories consumed for breakfast ----------- 836 to 1,194 calories If you multiply this by 24 UTA days, that is 20,064 to 28,656 calories in a year. That's almost 10 pounds weight gain in a year. In this example, a male weighing 160lbs speed- walking at 5mph needs to walk 173 to 247 miles to burn off the calories that he consumed. So, if you feel you don't have enough time in your current schedule to fit an exercise regimen you might want to think about the 247 miles you're going to need to walk when your about to bite into that glazed donut next UTA weekend. According to USDA Food Guide 2005, the daily caloric intakes are as follows: Male 19-30 years of age-------------------------2,400 to 3,000 calories 31-50 years of age-------------------------2,200 to 3,000 calories 51+ ------------------------------------------2,000 to 2,800 calories Female 19-30 years of age-------------------------2,000 to 2,400 calories 31-50 years of age-------------------------1,800 to 2,200 calories 51+ ------------------------------------------1,600 to 2,200 calories If you would like more information or need assistance regarding health promotion, please call or stop by the clinic during guard drill weekend.
