News Release: Missouri Airmen, aircraft standby for Irene’s fury Published Aug. 26, 2011 By Master Sgt. Mike R. Smith 139th Airlift Wing ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- Missouri Air National Guard members here are ready to support those in the path the nation's first hurricane this season, should the call come. Two 139th Airlift Wing aircrews and one C-130H Hercules cargo aircraft are on standby this weekend, ready to take flight within three hours to support a joint National Guard response in areas under threat of Hurricane Irene. The preparations are part of the Guard's efforts as the hurricane bears down on the East Coast this weekend with more than 100 mph sustained winds predicted. The Airmen and aircraft conduct missions for overseas contingencies as well as humanitarian efforts at home and abroad. Maj. Gen. Stephen L. Danner said the 139th Airlift Wing will "offer what it can to support affected states." Early this summer the Wing's Airmen supported callouts by Gov. Jay Nixon for the Missouri River flood. For nearly four months, the Wing has operated from several locations due to high water levels at Rosecrans, but continues to conduct daily operations as well as support nationwide callouts for assistance, if needed. -30- Lt.
